Wellbeing during COVID-19

Published on:

Sudden changes in our routine can have a knock on effect with other areas of our life, where normally we exhibit great success. Suddenly we can find ourselves not eating the same healthy way, being as active, perhaps drinking more. These are all normal responses; however they can lead to other undesirable health changes.

Eating well and staying active

Ensuring we are eating well, regularly and from a variety of food groups ensures we stay healthy.

Daily physical activity is great for both the body and the mind. Remember that physical activity doesn’t mean ‘sport’, it can be anything as simple as a daily walk of 30 minutes, through to higher intensity more demanding exercise.

If you do enjoy sport, there is guidance on the return to team sports.

It is important to remember that a further benefit of exercising with others is social interaction, which can be greatly beneficial for mood and feeling less isolated/more connected.

Screen time

Switching off devices/news and media might be particularly helpful for maintaining a feeling of wellbeing in the midst of COVID-19. Controlling our amount of screen time ensures we have time for activities that enrich us, and improve our mood.

Alcohol

Remember that a ‘low risk’ intake of alcohol is regarded as not more than 14 units of alcohol in a week, and ideally spread those 14 units over 3 or more days.

A healthier lifestyle

If all of this is new to you, and you are looking to embark upon a healthier lifestyle, you may find the NHS Live Well guide helpful.
