Get on PrEP free on the NHS: 56 Dean St

Short for HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis, it involves taking pills containing the drugs tenofovir and emtricitabine. The tablets need to be started before sex. This free HIV prevention treatment is available to everyone in the UK regardless of immigration status.

Anyone wanting to take PrEP for the first time can walk into Dean Street Express without an appointment.

Do you need it?

How do you take PrEP?

  1. Take 2 pills. After 2 hours you’re protected from catching HIV.
  2. Continue 1 pill around the same time every day to stay protected.

Stopping PrEP

  • After anal sex, continue the pills for at least 2 daily doses before stopping.
  • After vaginal sex, continue the pills for at least 7 daily doses before stopping (cis men can stop after 2 daily doses).

See our PrEP leaflet (PDF) for more information.

Before you start

PrEP is a very safe medicine. We’ll check your medical history and run some blood tests. You can usually start the treatment on the same day. It has very few interactions with other drugs (e.g. hormone treatments).
