Pain passing urine is a common gonorrhoea symptom in men. There’s often a yellow pus-like discharge from the urine hole (urethra). Chlamydia can also cause the same symptoms.
Gonorrhoea symptoms are much less likely when it affects the throat, anus, rectum, or cervix. It can cause conjunctivitis (pink eye) if it gets into your eye.
If you think you may have gonorrhoea you should stop having sex and contact the clinic as soon as possible.
When should I get tested?
If a sexual partner tells you that they have gonorrhoea you should tested. The test becomes very accurate once 2 weeks have passed after the last time you had sex together.
However, the test can miss gonorrhoea that was caught less than 2 weeks ago. That’s why the clinic will offer you gonorrhoea treatment if your sexual contact was less than two weeks ago. If your gonorrhoea test is positive, all your sexual partners should get tested.
What is the treatment for gonorrhoea?
The treatment for gonorrhoea is usually a single antibiotic injection. The injection is given into your buttock (arse cheek). You should not have sex for at least a week after the treatment.
